Small Business Saturday UK

Small Business Saturday: Small Business, Big Difference

What is Small Business Saturday?

Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-commercial campaign that trying to highlight small business success and encourage consumers to ‘shop local’ and show their support for small businesses within their communities. The day itself takes place on the first Saturday in December each year, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses throughout the year too. This year Small Business Saturday takes place on Saturday, December 3rd.

Why bother?

Believe it or not, shopping small is actually a big deal. It’s often easy to think that the ensuing chaos of black friday and the major corporations with their multi-million pound annual advertising budgets, have a monopoly on the little ‘shop next door’. In reality, it’s small businesses that make a massive contribution to the UK economy each year.

There were 5.5 million small or medium sized businesses in the UK at the start of 2016. They accounted for over 99.4% of all businesses. Small businesses employ 60% of all private sector employment in the UK. They make our economy some £1.8 trillion each year – 47% of all private sector turnover.

So yes, small is kind of big fry when it comes to retail, and we ignore it at our peril.

How successful was it last year?

  • Last year customers spent £623m with small businesses on Small Business Saturday alone, an increase of £119m or 24% on 2014.
  • #SmallBizSatUK trended at number 1 all day on Small Business Saturday with over 100,000 tweets sent in support of the day, reaching more than 25 million people
  • Over 75% of local councils actively supported the campaign, delivering on the ground activities including free parking, Christmas fairs and small business networking events.
