Why asking if bags for life are recyclable is the wrong question

We are often asked by customers if our eco friendly jute bags, juco shoppers or cotton totes are recyclable. The short answer is no. But the smart answer is, why would you want to recycle a bag for life? The clue is in the name. Bags for life are designed to be reused, not thrown away. That’s why it’s so important that whatever bag you do create, your customers will want to carry it for years to come.

According to environmental strategist, the three levels of environmental responsibility are firstly to REDUCE ie. use less, second to REUSE which is where bags for life fits in and finally to RECYCLE which is actually the least preferred of all the three.

1. REDUCE = WHEN YOU CAN

2. REUSE = PREFERABLE

3. RECYCLE = WHY?

Of course for those eco warriors amongst you, there’s a fourth option….

Why not up-cycle?

Up-cycling is an increasingly popular answer to the vast amounts of energy and resources that traditionally go into the processes of recycling. Instead you’re finding a new purpose for an unwanted item; before it’s thrown away. The number of products on Etsy tagged with the word “upcycled” has increased in the last 5 years from about 7,900 to nearly 167,000, an increase of 450%.

So it would seem wherever possible, up-cycling could be the way of the future. Certainly we’ve seen a variety of uses for our bags for life; from new clothing, to storage, to kitchen mops –  the uses are endless. Any other uses we haven’t thought of, leave a comment and let us know.
